Horse’s Entry

Horse’s Entry

Horse’s Entry

A narrow alleyway from Newgate Street, intersecting with Old Post Office Yard. The name appears on a map of Morpeth dating from 1826.

Farmers and those attending the market would unharness their horses and leave wheeled vehicles in the street. The horses would be taken to inn stables. Schoolboys coming in from the country would stable their ponies for the day.

Horse’s Entry

Outside the ‘Tiny Card Co.’ Maurice described how the alleys and yards of Morpeth would have smelt, and the sort of noises we would have heard in the 1700’s.

Animal dung and sounds would have permeated the town. More evidence of Miss D’Jeck’s presence suggested she had tried to make her way down the narrow alleyway known as Horse’s Entry.
